The New York Yankees in March and April – Part Two – The Pitchers (2023)

Potentially, from the injured list we gave you at the head of our last article, you could put together four-fifths of a starting rotation, and four relievers to add to your bullpen.

The injuries included Carlos Rodon, who was intended to be the number two starter in 2023, Luis Severino a potential number four starter, and Frankie Montas who was originally brought in from Oakland to be a number 5 starter.

Leading bullpen pieces who were missing in action included Tommy Kahnle, and Jonathan Loaisiga.

There was no question that these were going to be devastating for the Yankees’ early season chances of success.

In the end, the Yankees’ adjusted rotation started out pretty well, but by the end of April they had begun to fold their hands.

Again, the first table shows the piching statistics for the one game in March, the second is for the whole of April. Our comments cover the period up to 30th of April.

The New York Yankees’ best pitchers in order of ERA – April 2023

Starters

The season started with an excellent win for Gerrit Cole, followed by a no-decision for Clarke Schmidt, and then wins for Jhony Brito, and Nestor Cortes. However, things didn’t go quite so smoothly after that. They found themselves relying over much on debutant, Brito who is more likely to be a long reliever in the future, if he indeed has a future in the Bronx. Schmidt took three losses in his six starts, and produced the worst ERA (earned run average), and second worst WHIP (Walks and hits per innings pitched) – indeed his was the worst amongst the starters, second only to reliever, Albert Abreu.

Domingo German was moderately better achieving, like Brito, a pair of wins. It was anticipated that Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes would be the best starters in this cobbled together rotation – and indeed they were, but Cortes was far below the standard that was expected.

“Nasty” Nestor is the very definition of a confidence pitcher, and this showed up frequently in April. the first twice through the line-up he did well, the third time through was not so convincing. He seemed a little unsettled by the new pitching clock, although the jury is still out on that one. Some of the playful flair we saw in his winning run last year also disappeared.

Gerrit Cole led the team in Innings pitched, WHIP and ERA (aside from the novel appearance in our list of Isiah Kiner Falefa, who closed out a dreadful team performance when the Yankees lost 11-2 to the Minnesota Twins). He picked up 5 wins in a short period, and largely carried the team’s pitching every fifth day.

Relievers

In the relievers, there was also some players making their major league debuts, and others who had played very small roles elsewhere previously, and were now asked to step up – and did so successfully.

Ian Hamilton had previously appeared in 15 games across 3 seasons with the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins, with little success. But, in April for the Yankees, he pitched more innings than in any of those 3 years together, and he produced a 1.72 ERA, and a WHIP of 1.02, across nine games.

Jimmy Cordero also had 3 previous years in the majors, albeit he played for three different teams in that period, with more success than Hamilton. For the Yankees in April 2023, he was steady and was second in the team in WHIP (0.68). Other new Yankees were Nick Ramirez and Colten Brewer. They were considerably less successful, and spent time moving between the Bronx and Scranton (AAA).

Of the slightly more seasoned Yankees, Michael King, Ron Marinaccio, Wandy Peralta all did well. Jonathan Loaisiga also did likewise prior to his injury.

Good Clay Holmes and bad Clay Holmes both turned up in various games. He collected 4 saves, but needs to be much more consistent.

The worst arm out of the bullpen by some margin was Albert Abreu, who has been through uneven times, bad times, good times, being claimed off waivers, and all manner of things in previous years. I see more waivers in his future unless he can prove more consistent.

New York Yankees – Best Pitchers in March / April 2023 – 1 to 5 (LtoR): Gerrit Cole, Ian Hamilton,
Michael King, Jimmy Cordero, Wandy Peralta
