The Yankees’ pitching in June was not what they had hoped for. They were still carrying injuries – Max Fried is a long-term absentee, and the rest of the starting rotation – which was a strength in May – was not handling things well.

David Bednar who struggled in the previous month was back on form and Tim Hill who was improved on his last month’s performance too was getting little run support and despite a healthy WHIP was conceding more runs than he should.

Let’s take an overview of the different pitching performances:

Starters

As mentioned, Max Fried did not play at all this month. This left a starting rotation of Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers.

The majority of these did not fare well. Cole had come off the injured list and done extremely well in May. This month the wheels came off and of the regular starters he fared worst. His 6.12 ERA was the second worst on the team, and worst amongst those who were regulars on the roster. His WHIP was not as bad as Will Warren. Cole took 1 win, 3 losses and 1 no-decision. His performances were not pretty.

Warren didn’t take any wins at all, closing out the month with 2 losses and 2 no-decisions. His 5.49 ERA included giving up 10 walks which led to a team worst WHIP of 1.88 on the month.

Ryan Weathers can dominate the batters he faces and consequently was third on the team, in strikeouts achieving 23, behind only Carlos Rodon and Schlittler, who we will come to in just a moment. However, his 5.55 ERA will not do.

This left only Rodon and Schlittler with the kind of performances which the Yankees were looking for. Of the two, Rodon was the better. He took 3 wins and 2 no-decisions. He pitched on average well over 5 innings in each appearance and he had well over twice as many strikeouts as walks. This was the best month he has had since his return from injury.

Schlittler took 3 losses and only 1 win, but it has to be noted that he was unlucky. He struck out 42 and only gave up 8 walks, but the team was not nearly giving him the kind of run support he needed. His 6 starts were more than anyone else on the rotation and like Rodon, he averaged between 5 and 6 innings each time out. Let’s hope for a better month in July for Schlittler who the Yankees are relying on more and more.

Last of the starters was Elmer Rodriguez who had another brief visit to the Bronx. He is, of course, a noted prospect but he is showing very little sign of living up to that billing yet, in his brief visits to the Majors. His one start in June resulted in a loss, a 6.75 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. Improvement needed, if he is going to advance.

Relievers

The bullpen performance was much improved on last month.

David Bednar who struggled in May, bounced back to bring in a win and 4 saves, in the 9 games he appeared in and produced a 0.00 ERA and a 0.45 WHIP.

Brent Headrick who has been the most consistent of the Yankees’ relievers, was also the reliever who appeared in most game this month, with 13 appearances in middle relief. He pitched 13.0 innings in those 13 games and gave up only 6 hits. His strikeouts were more than double his walks and this led to a 0.69 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP.

Other much used relievers were Fernando Cruz, Camilo Doval, Tim Hill, Ryan Yarbrough and Paul Blackburn. Yarbrough and Blackburn were used in long relief and mostly in games where the Yankees were already well on their way to losing. Of the two, and in something of a reversal of fortunes, Blackburn was by far the more impressive whilst Yarbrough had the weakest month of his season. Blackburn gave up only one walk while striking out 11. With 15.1 innings in 10 appearances, he produced a 1.17 ERA and powered by that low total of walks an exemplary WHIP of 0.78. Yarbrough also appeared in 10 games but his June ERA ballooned to a 5.02 ERA.

Cruz produced a 1.26 WHIP but despite this and his 16 strikeouts, he was unusually dependent on others to see out the game for him. As previously mentioned, Hill was much better than he had been in May but his 0.67 WHIP could not prevent him from carrying a June ERA of 4.00. Doval achieved 2 wins and no losses but his WHIP was singularly unimpressive.

Jake Bird whose difficult experiences after signing for the Yankees at the trade deadline in 2025 meant he was moved to the minors, underwent a similar experience in Jine, albeit for a much shorter time – he spent eight days in Scranton. In the rest of the month, he made 9 appearances for the Yankees where he failed to dominate but he fared reasonably well.

Yovanny Cruz and Yerry De los Santos made brief appearances when transferred to the Major League roster in May and did very well. In June, they were allowed to repeat that experience. De los Santos appeared in 3 games and Y. Cruz only one. However, both played to a 0.00 ERA.
