The Yankees got better as August progressed. Part of this was due to members of the starting rotation getting into their groove after a rough stretch. The most notable of them was Max Fried who struggled throughout almost all of August, but then hit his stride in his last August appearance.
Alongside the other starters, the relief corps were much better than they had been in July.

Several relievers came in at the deadline (more on them presently), but the Yankees could also have used a new starter or two, but no-one arrived. They really aren’t in great shape.
Continue readingAs we have seen in the analysis of the batters’ statistics the Yankees really over-depended on the pitchers in June, and in particular their bullpen.
Obviously, this cannot continue. In a peculiar way, the steady drip, drip, drip, of pitchers returning from injury means that fresh arms are being made available. Some have been out all season (Tommy Kahnle), others for a shorter time (Ian Hamilton). And the return of Carlos Rodon is not too far away.
It seems likely that before the trading deadline, the Yankees will need to bring new offensive and pitching stars. Let’s hope they are able to do so without giving too much away.
The New York Yankees starting rotation rather fell apart in September.
Towards the end of August, they had given up on using Andrew Heaney as a starter – in September he didn’t do any better as a reliever.
Luis Gil, who had an astonishing start to his career in the majors in August, didn’t even come close to repeating that form in the following month.
Jameson Taillon spent time on the injury list. Clarke Schmidt became available but struggled. Luis Severino was available for the first time in the longest but the Yankees weren’t willing to risk him as a starter given all of his injury difficulties. Domingo German was added to the roster but wasn’t chosen to play until October. Thankfully, the bullpen regulars performed extremely well…
